Bill founded Grid Storage Consulting, LLC in 2012. GSC Provides expertise to equipment manufacturers interested in participating in emerging markets for energy storage as well as utilities and grid operators working to improve the operation, efficiency and reliability of electrical systems.
Before founding GSC, he served Beacon Power as President and CEO for 10 years. He led the evolution of Beacon’s flywheel technology while simultaneously working with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), grid operators, and public service commissions to create the market for energy storage based frequency regulation.
Beacon initiated commercial service in New England in 2008 and inaugurated the first-of-its-kind 20 megawatt facility connected to the New York grid in 2011, ahead of schedule and under budget. In response to a price reduction created by low natural gas prices, he led the industry effort to have the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission mandate higher payment for better frequency regulation performance. FERC order 755 was issued in October 2011.
Bill also has a strong interest in the initiatives and technologies associated with the Smart Grid and served as Director of the GridWise Alliance for three years. He has presented at numerous industry and financial conferences.
His earlier career includes leadership roles in general management and technology in diverse companies including Ford Motor Company, Torrington, York International and Ingersoll-Rand. He has a BS in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, where he also earned his MBA degree.
